Inhalation Toxicology Studies
using the EpiAirwayTM Tissue Model

EpiAirway tissues are ideal for inhalation toxicity studies of occupational or environmental air pollutants and toxins.

Examples of inhalation toxicity studies EpiAirway cultures could be used for include:

  • diesel exhaust
  • residual oil fly ash (ROFA)
  • occupational asthma/allergies (formalydehyde, toluene diisothiocyanate (DTI))
  • household asthma/allergies (cockroach, dustmite, molds, allergens)
  • chemical warfare agents (sulfur mustard, nitrogen mustards)
  • environmental air pollutants (SMOG, smoke, ozone)
  • respiratory infection (pneumonia, anthrax)
  • asbestos

EpiAirway cultures are available in standard 12 mm inserts (AIR-100), or Corning Costar Snapwell™ inserts (AIR-100 SNAP).

Snapwell inserts are ideally suited for gaseous exposures such as Inhalation Toxicity studies when mounted into special perfusion chambers designed to isolate the basolateral compartment from the apical surface. This configuration allows exposure of the apical surface while preventing gaseous materials from direct contact with the perfusion medium. Examples of these special perfusion chambers include the Ussing Diffusion Chamber Systems sold by Harvard Apparatus.
