CANNABIDIOL DIFFUSION ACROSS HUMAN TRACHEO-BRONCHIAL TISSUE (EPIAIRWAY™) AND INTRANASAL ABSORPTION IN RATS. Agu1, R., Valiveti1, S., Paudel1, K., and Klausner2, M., Hayden2, P. University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, Lexington, KY; 2MatTek Corporation, Ashland, MA. Presented at American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Annual Meeting, Baltimore, MD. November 7-10, (2004).

Summary: Some cannabinoids are potentially useful in cancer symptom management to alleviate pain and control chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. The drugs have also been shown to possess anticonvulsant, antianxiety/antipsychotic, and immuno-modulatory effects. The non-psychoactive cannabinoid, cannabidiol (CBD), is a clinical candidate for management of medical conditions where emesis and pain are prevalent. Considering the rapid onset of drug action following nasal administration, which sometimes superimposes intravenous (IV) doses, the nasal route appears to be a suitable route for systemic administration of cannabinoids. Therefore, a preclinical evaluation of CBD nasal permeation and the mechanism of its diffusion across the mucosa were completed.
