Summary: Dopamine is a catecholamine neurotransmitter implicated in CNS related disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia and Huntington’s disease. It is known to be transported by the dopamine transporter (DAT) in the CNS and an organic cation transporter (OCT) peripherally. It is orally ineffective due to high first pass metabolism and its inability to cross the blood brain barrier. Intranasal dopamine administration has shown preferential uptake into the brain as compared to intravenous administration. Bovine respiratory explants and a novel human derived tracheo/bronchial tissue system were used to investigate the processes underlying dopamine transport.
